In all the years that the Philadelphia Mint produced $5 Liberty coinage, they also minted Proofs for collectors. These Proofs are extremely rare in all years, and in 1881 only 42 proofs were struck, and experts believe that maybe 15-20 still exist. A very small mintage, when you consider that there were over 5.7 million $5 gold half eagles struck in 1881.
This specimen shows a beautiful mirror like field, with the devices in a Cameo finish. At this grade, it is almost impossible to see any flaws with the naked eye. A truly extraordinary piece
